Leading conversations and fostering joy in medicine
The Federation communicated EMD priorities internally to Permanente physicians and staff with co-CEO communications, highlighting topics such as access and experience, Permanente residency programs, and advocacy.
The Federation also worked to connect the communications efforts among PMGs by launching a site for the collaboration and sharing of playbooks and streamlining recruitment sites under the Permanente Medicine brand.
Leveraging research to expand Permanente Medicine values
The Permanente Journal expands the values of Permanente Medicine globally. As a diamond open-access publication, the Journal published 92 articles spanning various clinical disciplines in 2024 without charging any fees for authors or readers. Special sections in 2024 focused on Innovations in Trauma-Informed Health Care and Improving the Human Experience in Health Care.
Ensuring physician well-being and satisfaction
Teams continued efforts to enhance joy and meaning in medicine while addressing burnout among Permanente physicians and clinicians. This commitment was evident in PMG participation in the American Medical Association’s 2024 Joy in Medicine recognition program, which honored the ongoing dedication of PMGs to mitigating burnout for physicians and clinicians and improving access and experience for patients.
The Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group and Northwest Permanente received the honor in 2024, joining Southern California Permanente Medical Group, The Permanente Medical Group, The Southeast Permanente Medical Group, and Washington Permanente Medical Group, which had received recognition the prior year.
Further championing wellness across Kaiser Permanente, the Federation collaborated with KFHP/H’s National Healthy Workforce team to include more PMG presenters at the Kaiser Permanente Well-Being Summit, which saw nearly double the attendance from the prior year. Additionally, multiple PMGs participated in the International Conference on Physician Health, which promotes clinical research and actionable steps to improve physician well-being.
To support the professional growth of Permanente leaders, the Medicine and Leadership Program and the Executive Leadership Program equipped participants with essential skills and tools for effective leadership, complex decision-making, and task management. These programs provide consistent, high-quality training nationwide, ensuring leaders are well-prepared to achieve the organization’s goals.
